Lev 1:1-2
We have learnt about worship and the five offerings. Worship simply means drawing near to God and the only way to draw near a holy God is in holiness with offerings.
The first three offerings were optional. In the first three, it’s surrender and thanksgiving. The second two are obligatory because the Bible says – We’re all born in sin; we’re all infected with that disease that the Bible calls sin; we’re – sinners by nature, and sinners by choice. We learn four things concerning worship:
1. The worshipper never came empty-handed. He always had something to bring to the Lord
Deuteronomy 16:16-17 no one should come empty-handed before God. Every time we meet ask yourself What did you bring? The worshipper never came empty-handed.
Let me ask you, what did you bring today?
Have you brought worship in your heart to the Lord?
Have you brought a desire to see Him loved and worshipped and adored by you loving and serving His people?
2. Offering means – brought near. Worship means – drawing close to Jesus. That was the purpose of each of these offerings
We have to ask ourselves why are we here? We’re here to draw near to the Lord. We’re bringing an offering. We’ve come to draw near to the Lord. Hebrews 10:22 draw to God in holiness. But worship happens for the largest part of our life outside of these walls. That means that we worship God by drawing close to Jesus – wherever we live, wherever we work, wherever we’re found. Draw near to Jesus.
3. The worshipper offered that which was costly. They weren’t allowed to bring anything blemished to the Lord
2 Samuel 24:24 I shall not offer the Lord which does not cost me
God doesn’t want leftovers. God doesn’t want second-hand.
Another amazing thing is God knew that not everybody could afford to bring a bull or a lamb. The Lord made provision for the poor to bring something. He said, “Just bring a bird.” If you were poor, and you couldn’t afford anything, you could probably afford to bring a bird, to bring it as an offering to the Lord. God meets us there.
4. The worshipper was actively involved in the process
Worship is not a spectator sport. Worship in song is not about entertainment. Worship in the Word is not about personality. We should be investing ourselves in worshipping God in song.
Psalms 103:1 bless the Lord all my soul and all that is within me bless his holy name.
We should be taking all that we are, our whole mind, all of our heart, all of our strength, to worship God, engaging in the study of His Word, worshipping God with our mind.
Psalms 100:2-4 Participating in worship.
If worship is not to be a spectator thing, it doesn’t matter who is leading, right?
Whoever is driving the bus, I just want to get on board; I want to go to the throne with whoever it is that’s leading.
Conclusion
Worship and offerings derive their effectiveness from the worshiper.
