1. Be Led by the Holy Spirit
Acts 8:25-40
So when they had testified and preached the word of the Lord, they returned to Jerusalem, preaching the gospel in many villages of the Samaritans. Now an angel of the Lord spoke to Philip, saying, "Arise and go toward the south along the road which goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza." This is desert. So he arose and went. And behold, a man of Ethiopia, a eunuch of great authority under Candace the queen of the Ethiopians, who had charge of all her treasury, and had come to Jerusalem to worship, was returning. And sitting in his chariot, he was reading Isaiah the prophet. Then the Spirit said to Philip, "Go near and overtake this chariot." So Philip ran to him, and heard him reading the prophet Isaiah, and said, "Do you understand what you are reading?" And he said, "How can I, unless someone guides me?" And he asked Philip to come up and sit with him. The place in the Scripture which he read was this: "He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and as a lamb before its shearer is silent, so He opened not His mouth. In His humiliation His justice was taken away, and who will declare His generation? For His life is taken from the earth." So the eunuch answered Philip and said, "I ask you, of whom does the prophet say this, of himself or of some other man?" Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, "See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?" Then Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him. Now when they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught Philip away, so that the eunuch saw him no more; and he went on his way rejoicing. But Philip was found at Azotus. And passing through, he preached in all the cities till he came to Caesarea.
John 4 (The Samaritan Woman)
Jesus left Judea and departed again to Galilee. But He needed to go through Samaria. So He came to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour. A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, "Give Me a drink." For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food. Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans. Jesus answered and said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."
Practical Steps for Evangelism
Be gentle, respectful, and presentable. Be wise and courteous in your approach. Say hi with a smile and then introduce yourself, noting that you are born again.
Mjulie hali [Ask them how they are doing] and enquire if they know Jesus.
IMPORTANT: Usihubirie wameokoka [Do not preach to those who are already saved] only to discover later.
If they do not know Jesus, ask them for a minute to share God's love with them. At this point, you can begin with your testimony of how Christ changed you and what He has done for you.
2. Focus on God's Love for the Sinner Instead of Condemning Them
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
3. Point Out That Every Man Has Sinned and Is in Need of Salvation
Romans 3:23
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
4. Show Them the Consequences of Sin and the Reward of Repentance
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Consequences of sin: Death—separation from God forever.
Reward for repentance: Eternal life.
Benefits of Accepting Christ
2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
Accepting Christ makes you a new creation—from God's people to God's children.
John 1:12
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.
New identity, new relationship with God.
Closing the Encounter
Ask them if they wish to receive Jesus. Pray with them and for any other need.
If they do not have a church, welcome them to our church.
If they are not ready, ask if they have a need, pray with them, and welcome them to church.
Represent Christ the best way possible.
2 Corinthians 5:20
Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God.
Avoid senseless and time-wasting debates.
Colossians 2:16
So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths.
