Leviticus 5: 14-19- The Trespass Offering, September 19, 2021

By Rev. Michael Mwangi

Now it’s interesting that in the trespass offerings –

There is not just the component of the offering for sin, but there is the component of restitution. They had to make restitution for the person they’ve wronged. They had to restore what was hurt or lost, plus twenty per cent.

Two big points of application –

First:

There are some sins that are between God and man. But there are some sins where –

we’ve not only wronged God, but we’ve wronged people around us.

We have to go to God.

But when we’ve wronged people around us, we have to go to the individual – we’ve wronged, we’ve harmed or offended Matt 5:23

Secondly:

There are sins that have consequences, costly consequences.

Though the sin is forgiven, there can be yet consequences that go with it. For example –

There are some sins that you can commit that carry fines yet there are sins that have both jail terms that go with them as well as fines.

And when you go, and you stand before the judge, and the judge brings down the hammer, and says, “You’re guilty, and you’re going to serve x amount of time in prison” you cannot tell him, I confessed that sin to God. And God forgave me.” Most criminals have come to faith in Jesus while in prison and they confess it was as a great burden was lifted off of them right in the jail cell. But they still had to serve the rest of their time, because their sin carried jail time with it.

There are some sins that, though you’ve confessed, and God has forgiven you, yet will affect your standing and ministry within the body of Christ.

There are some sins that limit your ability to serve in the ministry. 1 Chronicles 22:7-8

David was denied the privilege of building God a sanctuary because of his involvement in battles.

If you are a polygamist even after getting saved and forgiven you cannot be an elder. Titus 1:6

If you remarry out of disagreement, there are ministry and leadership in the church that you can not serve because you no longer serve as a biblical example.

There are sins that you commit that prohibit you from serving in children’s ministry or youth ministry.

Can God forgive a child sex offender? Absolutely yes! But that probably is going to prohibit that person from ever serving God in children ministry. That is why we have background checks for those to serve in the church. We believe that if you’re a Christian you’ve been forgiven of any sin you could have ever committed, but there are some sins that we need to know that you committed if they carry certain things that are going to disqualify you from serving in certain capacities.

We love you no less than anybody else. Jesus loves you so much He died for you. But that sin is going to have consequences. There are sins that have an effect on how you fit into the body of Christ. It’s not that you’re not forgiven but some sins come with greater consequences

Classic example:

It’s the reality that sin comes with consequences even when you are forgiven

2 Samuel 12:1-16

David was charged with two counts that deserved death sentence according to the law. He knew it well as per his verdict v5 and 6

Verse 9 Gods charges him with 2 counts

Leviticus 24:17 murder
